A Real Teacher

This semester I had to take an Advanced Public Speaking, and I was dreading it because I hate public speaking. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to take this class from one of the greatest professors Concordia has and although I learned a lot about public speaking, I learned more about life.

Mizzo has the reputation of being a badass professor-- for good reason. Her enthusiasm is contagious and she cares deeply about what her students are learning. Another major plus is that her energy level is through the roof. In her class I learned how to use my voice effectively and how to slow the f down when I'm speaking in front of people, but like I said, there were some important lessons about life as well.

Anyone who knows me knows that I have the tendency to be an emotional person and there was a moment when I ended a speech in tears because I felt so passionately about what I was speaking about. I apologized profusely and I was angry with myself for letting my emotions get in the way, but Mizzo wasn't going to let me get away with that. She transformed this moment into a learning opporunity and reminded me that is important to embrace these emotions because it is a part of who I am; and just because I'm crying doesn't mean that I am weak, it means I'm vulnerable and that is important for people to see.

Mizzo also taught us that we should never apologize. Our class was constantly saying sorry, usually something that was just an honest thought. She reminded us that we need to own who we are and we cannot apologize for being real. We live in a world filled with apologies and they are completely unnecessary. We need to be brave and accept the truth and be real with each other.

Finally, Mizzo taught us that we need to be brave. I cannot tell you the number of times she told us that we needed to be brave with her. The world is scary sometimes, especially when giving a speech, but it doesn't have to be. If we can be brave, life becomes that much easier. This was something that was crucial to hear in a class like Advanced Public Speaking, but it's also important to remember for life.

I am so glad I had the opportunity to take a class with Mizzo and get to know such an amazing group of people. If I can run my future classroom with half the energy as she does, I know my students will turn out alright. A real teacher is one who leaves their students feeling inspired and teaches them more than just the content of the class. Although I'm thankful for the content I learned in the class, I'm extra thankful for the life lessons I learned and the opportunity to get to know such a wonderful professor.  Thanks for an awesome semester!
