Habitat for Humanity

This past week was our Spring Break and I was lucky enough to spend it with a wonderful group of people on a Habitat for Humanity trip to La Porte, TX. This trip was an amazing experience and it taught me some valuable lessons about life.

The first thing I learned is what happens to a random collection of people when you throw them together on a bus for 25 hours, make them sleep in the same space, and force them to build a house together. All of these things might sound like they would make a person go crazy, but the reality is that it creates a bond that lasts forever.

Our entire group came from different parts of campus and we did not know each other well before the trip, but I can assure you that this group of people now has a secret language that definitely corresponds to late night games of Charades. And I can tell you with certainty that we learned things about each other that we may not have ever cared to learn (IBS). There were also countless hours of laughter, followed by 5 hours stranded in Sioux Falls that resulted in some tears. It was truly amazing to see these bonds form and I'm happy I was able to spend my break surrounded by so many wonderful people who shared my enthusiasm for ice cream EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Although it was great getting to know the people on our trip, it was also awesome to get to know people in the La Porte community. As we go through life it is important to listen to other people-- even if they are strangers. They most likely have something valuable that we can take and apply to our own lives. For example, FloAnn made life changing pies and she is someone I aspire to be. Her and her husband Jim are also the definition of true love. (Here is an article about their love: http://www.aroundlaporte.com/). Tully was our site leader and he taught me how to effectively hammer a nail. Tom was our other site leader and he taught me that it is okay to be sassy in the real world-- in fact, he made it seem enjoyable. Overall, we met some really wonderful people that we will never forget.

This was an amazing Spring Break and I could not imagine spending it any other way. It's impossible to sum it all up in one blog post, but trust me when I say that this was the week of a life time. Huge thank you to all of my wonderful travelers/hammers/nail gun extraordinaire for making this experience so amazing. And always remember, horse=unicorn fart.
