Let The Great World Spin.
Warning: This post is about a book. I am indeed an English major and I like reading. And I love this book. So that's what it's about. If you don't like reading or books I suggest you don't read this post.
So last year we were all required to read the "summer book read." It was "Zoli" by Colum McCann I actually read it. TWICE. The first time around I thought it seemed pretty lame. However, the second time around my professor forced us to read more into it. I think that this particular professor and her method of teaching this novel solidified my decision to become an English teacher.
My second interaction with Colum McCann was when he came to Concordia's Symposium. Like most freshman, I kind of blew off this whole day and was just pretty pumped about not having class. But the same professor that forced us to reread "Zoli" made us go listen to the keynote speaker who happened to be Colum McCann.
I wish I still had my notes from that lecture because he shed a whole new light on what art was. For those of you who don't remember, the whole theme of the Symposium was art. And let me tell you, McCann happens to know A LOT about art.
The most recent novel I read, "Let the Great World Spin," is literally one big masterpiece. Honestly one of the best books I've read in a long, long time. Maybe even my whole life.
McCann began working on this novel shortly after September 11. Even though he is an Irish author, he felt the pain of this tragedy. He even ties in the Twin Towers. However, the story is set in 1974. Instead of choosing to write about that specific September he went back. In his words , "wherever we are now is wherever we once were." His put such an interesting spin on the whole novel.
I wish I had what it took to type out what this novel is all about, but my best advice is for you to simply pick it up and read it. Hopefully you are able to get as much out of it as I did.
This book has reminded me that we are all connected in some weird interesting way. And we don't know what is going on in the lives of people around us but we should challenge ourselves to look up and ask some questions, get some answers.
I have never felt so passionately about a book before. I can't wait for these types of feelings to continue throughout my life. It's moments like these I'm sure I made the right choice.
