Student Teaching
It's hard to believe that the most amazing and influential semester of my college career is over.
This semester was filled with valuable learning experiences, and although it killed my social vibe, I wouldn't trade what I learned and the time I spent with my students for anything. The time I spent in the classroom showed me that I really was born to do this. There were times when it was harder than I ever imagined, but when I was able to watch a concept click in a student's brain, it was all worth it. And the relationships I built with the students were incredible. I know people feel sorry for me because I spent my entire semester with 7th and 9th graders, but the reality is that they aren't all that bad. And we have to remember that we were at the point in our life once too. That point where we don't know who we are or what's happening with our bodies. That point when our biggest concern is who we will hang out with on Friday night. I remember these times well, perhaps too well, and I think that is what made me so successful with my students.
Believe it or not, I did more than just hang out with super cool kids all semester. I taught The Odyssey, which was HARD. It was challenging and rewarding. At the beginning of the unit, the students groaned. At the end of the unit, they made a radio play and actually had FUN. This is what teaching is all about: Teaching students new ideas and concepts and helping them appreciate their new knowledge. Like I said, it's not easy, but it was so worth it.
My cooperating teacher helped make this experience incredible for me. When we first met she told me that it was her job to make sure that I left here wanting to be a teacher more than anything else in the entire world. Her patience and constant encouragement strengthened my confidence as a teacher.
I think I could classify this semester as my most challenging semester yet, but I didn't mind. I feel so fortunate that I was able to teach these students, and that they were able to teach me. I am so incredibly thankful to have such a positive experience that has me so excited to have my own classroom.
I may not know what the next step in my life is, but I do know that I cannot wait to be a teacher.
