Strangers and Adventures

Today was a great day. In some ways it was awful, but in most ways it was great. And it was great thanks to some random guys we met at a gas station in Audubon, Minnesota.

It all started when my friends and I left Duluth around 9:47 this morning. We were attempting to return to Concordia in good ol' Moorhead (across the entire state of Minnesota). The key word in the previous sentence is attempting. We had a countless amount of people tell us we were fools for doing this. "You're going to die." "You are driving into a blizzard." "Watch out for the weather." Blah blah blah. Naturally, we didn't believe any of this and figured we could do it. The weather was clear heading out of Duluth and we figured we would be golden. Boy, were we wrong.

The weather started looking pretty rough halfway into our drive. Kim's wipers were proving to be impossible to work with. We were all stressed out and Mary's noises definitely were not helping the situation. After getting to Detroit Lakes, we made the decision to keep going on our journey. We had already come this far, we could definitely make the 43 MILES left to Moorhead. Wrong again.

5 miles out of Detroit Lakes, we managed to slowly float into the ditch. It was kinda cool. Comparable to going down the log flume at Valleyfair. We immediately called Triple A and proceeded to sit in the ditch for an additional two hours with a State Trooper guarding us while we waited for the tow truck man. We managed to keep the tears at a manageable level, and thanks to Shannon's positive take on the situation we were laughing in no time. Of course, these are blizzard conditions and snow continued to fall down so by the time the tow truck driver got there we could barely open our doors. Although our tow truck driver was somewhat of a douche, he got us safely out of the ditch and for that I am thankful. (There was one comment he made that made my want to punch him in the face though... Something along the lines of: "Maybe you should learn to drive before you go out in a blizzard." Excuse me.)

After stopping at the nearest gas station, we learned that Kim's trusty Sonata would not be able to get us back to the hotel we had decided to stay at while sitting in the ditch. Fortunately, two random strange men offered to give us a ride back to Detroit Lakes. As we were riding along, one of them mentioned that he could try to get us a deal at the hotel. He came in with us and got us our room for twenty dollars cheaper and made a deal with the manager to get us some free food. This was a man who knew how to get shit done. And we definitely liked him.

We are now sitting safely in the comfort of our Holiday Inn hotel room. And I am confident that we would still be sitting at the Tesoro in Audubon without the kindness of these men. It's good to know there are nice people out in this world who are willing to go the extra mile to help others out. I know my friends and I are thankful to these strangers and their kind hearts (and the 20 dollars I had from Grandma to pay them).

Just a friendly reminder to be kind and considerate, even if it is a stranger!
